Wisdom teeth are usually the last teeth to come through the gums.
For most people this is an uneventful process; however, others suffer from problems that create a need for their removal.
When the jaw is not large enough to accommodate wisdom teeth, they can become impacted, meaning they are unable to erupt or they may come through misaligned. Wisdom teeth may grow sideways, emerge only part way from the gum or remain trapped beneath the gum and bone.
The main reasons for wisdom teeth to be extracted are:
- Wisdom teeth only partially erupt. This leaves an opening for bacteria to enter around the tooth and cause an infection. Pain, swelling, jaw stiffness and general illness can result.
- There is a chance that poorly aligned wisdom teeth will damage an adjacent tooth.
- A cyst forms, destroying surrounding structures such as bone or tooth roots.
Removal of a wisdom tooth is a very common procedure. Oral surgeons generally recommend the removal of troublesome wisdom teeth as soon as possible.
