How is sedation administered?
An anaesthetic is applied to the forearm or the back of your hand, and then a sedative and often an analgesic (painkiller) is administered into the vein. It is not like a normal intramuscular injection, the injection is virtually painless.
Before Treatment
You are required not to eat or drink for at least six hours prior to the procedure. If you are currently on any medications please inform us so that these can be noted on your papers and taken with a sip of water the day of the treatment. You should cease from smoking for at least 24 hours before your appointment. Contact lenses should not be worn. Nail polish or false acrylic nails should also be removed.
After Treatment
Following the sedation treatment, you will sleep lightly for a short time and there will be numbness in your mouth where any local anaesthetic was injected. Due to the sedation effect of the medication, you will need someone to escort you home after treatment is completed.
Once you are at home
During the day, most patients doze lightly when they arrive home, you should be made comfortable and be kept close to supervision. Take care to avoid minor accidents as after sedation you may feel awake but still be a bit groggy. It may be wise to eat a light meal and drink a lot of fluid when you arrive home.
'It is strongly advised you do not smoke or consume alcohol for at least 12 hours following your treatment. Some patients may experience slight nausea; if so contact us so that appropriate mediation can be advised. Do not operate heavy machinery or drive.
