Is IV Sedation safe?
Your safety and comfort is paramount to us, and it is our objective to treat you successfully if you are uncertain about dental procedures and alleviate any concerns you may have.
IV Sedation is a very safe procedure. Sedation performed in dental surgeries by qualified dentists has an excellent safety record. When the patient is in good health the risk of a serious reaction is very small.
During sedation, our anaesthetist is always with you. Your vital signs are monitored during your entire procedure. You are never alone.
In your initial consultation, Dr. Heather will be happy to answer all of your questions about sedation dentistry. He will take you through every step of your procedure to ensure that you fully understand how IV sedation is conducted and how it can help you.
What are the side effects?
Some of the common side effects of sedation dentistry include:
- Retrograde amnesia- where a patient will have little or no recollection of the treatment
- Little or no post-operative soreness- the patient will often recover sooner and not require any pain medications.
- A dry mouth- This is because the sedation decreases the saliva flow.
- Hiccups-a small percentage of patients find that they experience hiccups. This is very uncommon, and usually only found in around 3% of patients and do not last longer than about 10 minutes.
Will I be asleep?
The term IV sedation suggests being completely asleep. In reality, you still remain conscious during IV sedation. You will also be able to understand and respond to requests from our dentist however, you may not remember the procedure as IV sedation induces a state of deep relaxation.
